Tinubu Says Reforms Necessary to Confront Longstanding Economic Challenges

Date:

President Bola Tinubu has said that reforms are necessary to confront longstanding economic challenges and reposition the country towards sustainable growth.

The President stated this on Thursday in his nationwide broadcast to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

He said “our reforms did not create the weaknesses in our economy. They confronted them.

“We must remember why we began this journey and how far we have already come.”

Tinubu added that Nigeria’s economy had turned the corner, with reforms delivering improved stability, renewed growth and stronger economic resilience.

He disclosed that the administration had completed the emergency phase of economic reforms and was shifting attention towards delivering shared and widespread prosperity.

“For three years, our overriding purpose was to correct our nation’s course.

“Now, our purpose is simple: shared and widespread prosperity,” he stated.

The President explained that Nigeria’s economy had grown by more than four per cent in 2026, with both oil and non-oil sectors contributing to renewed growth.

He listed declining oil theft, falling inflation, rebuilt foreign reserves and improved stability in the foreign exchange market among the gains recorded.

Tinubu also disclosed that Nigeria achieved its highest-ever non-oil export revenue in 2025, exceeding six billion dollars.

He described the achievement as evidence of growing opportunities for Nigerian businesses and enterprises.

“These are not idle claims. International observers, journalists, NGOs and multilateral institutions can see the change,” he said.

Tinubu said international institutions had acknowledged improvements in Nigeria’s economic stability and resilience, while foreign direct investment continued to rise.

He, however, stressed that economic progress must extend beyond growth figures and improved statistics to tangible improvements in Nigerians’ daily lives.

The President envisioned a Nigeria where farmers produce safely and profitably, factories enjoy reliable electricity, businesses access credit and young people secure productive employment.

He expressed optimism that the next phase of the administration’s economic agenda would translate improved stability and growth into broadly shared prosperity and greater opportunities for citizens.
