Ikorodu Local Government in Lagos State, in collaboration with TechnoServe Nigeria, has unveiled the Plastic Recycling Programme in Nigeria (PReP 2.0), aimed at improving waste management, generating employment and tackling plastic pollution within the council area.

Chairman of Ikorodu Local Government, Mr Adedayo Ladega, said on Friday in Lagos that the programme is scheduled to begin across the area in August.

He spoke during a meeting with a delegation from TechnoServe Nigeria.

According to Ladega, the programme is expected to create economic opportunities, reduce plastic pollution, as well as foster cleaner and healthier communities.

Ladega said the initiative, funded by The Coca-Cola Foundation and implemented by TechnoServe, aligned with his administration’s SEED Agenda, particularly its development pillar, as well as Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production.

He said the programme would strengthen plastic recycling value chains, create sustainable livelihoods and encourage a circular economy.

“This partnership is another milestone in our drive to build a cleaner, greener and more prosperous Ikorodu.

“Beyond protecting the environment, the programme will create economic opportunities for our residents and promote responsible waste management,” he said.

The chairman urged residents, community leaders and other stakeholders to embrace the initiative to ensure its success.

Mr Agboola Kehinde, a representative of TechnoServe Nigeria, said that the organisation was committed to working with the council and relevant stakeholders to strengthen plastic recycling systems and expand economic opportunities within the community.

He said the programme would also support the development of a sustainable recycling value chain capable of creating lasting environmental and economic benefits.
