The Kano State Government has warned mining companies operating in the state against abandoning mining sites without carrying out mandatory environmental reclamation measures.
The warning was contained in a statement issued by Adamu Ibrahim-Dabo, Director of Public Enlightenment in the Ministry of Mineral Resources, on Thursday in Kano.
The statement said the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Alhaji Tijjani Sharif, gave the warning after presiding over the monthly Executive Management Meeting.
The meeting reviewed the activities, achievements, challenges and plans of various departments to improve performance.
Sharif expressed concern over the failure of some mining operators to comply with established environmental and mining regulations.
He stressed that proper reclamation of mined-out areas was essential to protecting the environment, human lives, vegetation and wildlife.
Sharif said the ministry would continue to enforce compliance with relevant provisions of the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act, 2007, its regulations and applicable Kano State mining policies.
The permanent secretary warned that mining operators who failed to comply with approved reclamation requirements would face legal consequences.
He commended Gov. Abba Yusuf for his continued support and willingness to collaborate with mining companies, investors and other stakeholders.
He said such collaboration would promote responsible mining, environmental protection and sustainable economic development.
Sharif also commended the ministry’s directors and staff for their commitment and dedication to implementing the state’s mining policies.
