Life of a Young Auchi Girl

By Martha Odamah

At the early stage of my life, I received admonitions from my parents that “Life is best lived independently and devoid of entitlement mentality”. By living that way, you will have a sense of responsibility and an active role to play in shaping your future for the best.

This is the case of every average girl from Auchi, Edo State, A girl child in this town is industrious. As a result of this, they do not have entitlement mentality; they work for their welfare and hardly depend on family to attain whatever the height they crave for.

As they grow, they engage in acquisition of one skill or the other like tailoring, catering, hair making, cosmetology, etc.because they all have the belief that “skill is a lucrative means of livelihood in every society”. As they progress in skill acquisition, they make sure that they are not lagging behind in their academic pursuit, as they engage in these two spheres, concurrently.

Some of these girls commence their own business after acquiring a skill, or enhance the business of their family.

The ones who cannot handle the concurrence of schooling and working have to focus on one. Those who follow their skills are rest assured to have built foundational knowledge in academics.

Another feature to reckon with an average Auchi girl is resilience. They are strong and are hardly brought down by trials and challenges.

My mum once shared with my siblings and I about how she started matrimonial journey with my dad, and how they’ve been able to sustain the family till this very day. They are from this Auchi, and bear the trait of resilience and hard work in them.

They started this matrimonial journey in their twenties, and because my mum had a good paying skill, which she acquired in her teens, she was able to contribute her quota financially in the running of the family. This has kept my parents together as they both needed each other to make the family great, through the help of God.

It’s a fact that if you grow up in Auchi, there’s the tendency that the spirit of hustling is already infused in you.

It’s a busy town where people strive hard to make ends meet, and ensure a brighter future for their families.
